ABOUT THE ARTS
“Fast Taste”
by Catherine Grossrieder
The following pieces are part of the Fast Taste collection, a solo show I had in the summer of 2017 at Over the Influence Gallery in Hong Kong. Now they are being displayed once again at Club Third, a smaller and more intimate gallery.
The inspiration for this body of work came from my tenure in Hackney, London from 2009-2010. I was surrounded by many chicken shops, selling fried chicken. This really related to me as when I was a hungry artist, I didn’t care about what I consumed, even if it’s unhealthy and cheap comfort food.
Compromised financial status makes it hard for people to get on their high horse, so to speak, so let’s enjoy what we can afford. With my background in graffiti and love of cartoons, I also thought the topic and stigma surrounding fried chicken and fast food provided ample ideas for my characters. Additionally, such takeaways are found in underpriviledged ghetto areas, so I include some urban touches like rudeboys and hoodrats.
Fast food unifies us.
These days, I see so much propganda involving the fast food industry shared by liberals on social media. Hence I create satirical artworks mocking the immoral practices, the genetic modifications and hormones surrounding the industry.
My artworks are not here to lecture you to eat healthier, but to enjoy comfort food and have a laugh.
